KROTO MEDAL
(previously called KROTO AWARD)
The KROTO MEDAL (named after the late Nobel Prize Sir Harold Kroto, who was the Honorary President, The NANOSMAT Society) is a prestigious prize conferred on an outstanding, dynamic young researcher/scientist (PhD, PostDoc, Junior Scientist level) for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
1. NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Following are the different methods for candidature nomination for the award(s):
Members of the NANOSMAT Scientific Committee can nominate candidates.
Any senior and prominent scientist or researcher, belonging to an internationally recognised and established institution, can nominate any one candidate for the award (one nomination per person). However, such nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the proposer supporting the nominated candidate for the award. Letters of nominations on official letterheads together with the candidates CV should be emailed to krotomedal@nanosmat.org
2. DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2026
For the KROTO MEDAL 2026 – the deadline for nomination submissions is 15 DECEMBER 2025.
Late nominations will not be considered.
3. CRITERIA
The candidates must satisfy the following criteria:
International Visibility & Leadership
The candidate must be an outstanding and extremely dynamic researcher and must be recognised as an emerging leader in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology with a distinguished track record of original contributions in the NANO related field.
Publications
Candidates must have published extensively in international peer reviewed and high impact factor journals (showing good citation index results).
Innovation
The candidate should be or had been engaged with innovative and cutting-edge research. Candidates holding any patents and/or involved with setting up of high-tech spin-out companies because of their work would be greatly advantaged for this award.
4. NATURE OF AWARD
The prize will be composed of the following:
The ‘Kroto medal’
Certificate
400 EUR cash
5. RULES
A candidate can only receive the prize once and not more than this.
The winner needs to attend the NANOSMAT conference to personally receive the award.
The winning candidate will deliver the “KROTO Medal Lecture” at the NANOSMAT conference in Naples, Italy.
Unsuccessful candidates can be re-considered for the award the following 2 years. Therefore, they will be in the system for a total of three years.
The candidates for the award must be of maximum 35 years of age.
6. SELECTION PROCESS
The committee will review the applications (candidates CV and nomination letters) and select one successful researcher for this prestigious award.
